Resuspension, Redistribution, and Deposition of Oil-Residues to Offshore Depocenters After the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

چکیده
The focus of this study was to determine the long-term fate oil-residues from 2010 Deepwater Horizon (DwH) oil spill due remobilization, transport, and re-distribution residue contaminated sediments down-slope depocenters following initial deposition on seafloor. We characterized hydrocarbon residues, bulk sediment organic matter, ease resuspension, sedimentology, accumulation rates define distribution patterns in a 14,300 km 2 area southeast DwH wellhead (1,500 2,600 m water depth). Oil-residues were detected at low concentrations 62% studied sites specific layers, denoting episodic during 2010–2014 2015–2018 periods. residues exhibited spatial pattern that did not correspond with surface slick, subsurface plume or original seafloor expression. Three different regions apparent overall distinguished by nature accumulation, timing oil-residue deposition, carbon content isotopic composition foram fracturing extent. These data indicate resuspension redistribution occurred years event must be considered determining spilled deposited

Thresholds in marsh resilience to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill
Ecosystem boundary retreat due to human-induced pressure is a generally observed phenomenon. However, studies that document thresholds beyond which internal resistance mechanisms are overwhelmed are uncommon. Following the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill, field studies from a few sites suggested that oiling of salt marshes could lead to a biogeomorphic feedback where plant death resulted in i...

Following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, petroleum-related compounds and chemical dispersants were detected in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. As a result, there was concern about the risk to human health through consumption of contaminated seafood in the region. Federal and Gulf Coast State agencies worked together on a sampling plan and analytical protocols to determine whether seafo...

During the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill, a wide range of gas and aerosol species were measured from an aircraft around, downwind, and away from the DWH site. Additional hydrocarbon measurements were made from ships in the vicinity. Aerosol particles of respirable sizes were on occasions a significant air quality issue for populated areas along the Gulf Coast. Yields of organic aerosol part...
متن کاملOrganic aerosol formation downwind from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
A large fraction of atmospheric aerosols are derived from organic compounds with various volatilities. A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) WP-3D research aircraft made airborne measurements of the gaseous and aerosol composition of air over the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that occurred from April to August 2010. A narrow plume of hydrocarbons was...
متن کاملEvolutionary responses to crude oil from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill by the copepod Eurytemora affinis
The BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Disaster was the most catastrophic offshore oil spill in U.S. history, yet we still have a poor understanding of how organisms could evolve in response to the toxic effects of crude oil. This study offers a rare analysis of how fitness-related traits could evolve rapidly in response to crude oil toxicity. We examined evolutionary responses of populations of the comm...
